Life in the National Landscape

Koli Through the Ages - Part 1

There has only been permanent settlement on the peaks of Koli's fells for almost 300 years. Koli became well-known at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries through the works of several Finnish artists. Master composer Jean Sibelius considered Koli one of the greatest experiences of his life, and it is said to have inspired his fourth symphony. Koli became a symbol of the Kalevala landscape and Finnish identity. At the same time, Koli also became known as a tourist destination.

Life in the National Landscape - Koli Through the Ages tells not only about Koli's significance to Finnish art and its continuously operating tourist destination for over 100 years, but also extensively about the history of the Koli region and its inhabitants from early settlement to the present day.

The articles are complemented by rich illustrations, collected from various archives and private individuals.

The work was completed in cooperation between Lieksa Adult Education Centre and Koli Local Heritage Association ry.
